Shift the Galaxy

Been a while since I had a new blog post here! Sorry about that. Quarantine orders have been insane and I haven’t had much spare time to myself. And that’s wonderful and all, but I could really use some time off…

"The whole galaxy will be mine!"

“The whole galaxy will be mine!”

I haven’t broken out the toys for a long time, but the Decepticons demanded to be in this post. I kinda didn’t have a choice. They broke into the photo shoot and I couldn’t shoo them away.

The above is Sharka’s new shift knob made by Mike of @formfunctionwood. And it is GORGEOUS!

To give some back story, I made this beautiful holofoil galaxy Rainbow 80s horn button up for a customer a couple months back near the start of the Covid-quarantine. I was enamored with it and kept one of the extras for myself. It promptly went into Sharka and brightened up our food and supply trips. Quarantine has been pretty painful to the soul and any bright spot (like taking Sharka for all grocery trips) has been needed.

Shortly after installing this, I saw an instagram post from Mike showing off a similar galaxy shift knob he made for a customer of his. It was love at first sight. I immediately messaged requesting one of my own.

A month later, this is in my hands. Er’ Megatron’s hands.

The shift knob is better than I’d hoped. The finish depth and colors are beyond comparison. The size is perfect for my palm. It even has a decent weight to it at 145 grams.

I’m smitten.

Time to show off the installed photos.

Perfection.

Perfection.

It sits perfectly on the MiataRoadster shifter. The purple maple burl, while beautiful, is happily regulated to the mostly unseen front area and the galaxy gets to shine. That red nebula on the driver’s side is just ever so slightly more beautiful than the lovely light blue swirls the passenger gets to see.

And if I’m honest, I have one complaint – it’s painfully hard to photograph. I shot something like 100 photos to get these few good ones. But it was worth the effort.

Huge thanks for making this very special piece for me, Mike! It’ll have a proud place in my permanent collection once I wrestle it out of Megatron’s grasp.

Great to see Sharka is getting some love (and giving some back) in these hard times.
That shift knob is a work of art.

Does this mean that there are a set of matching Cosmos (or “Galaxy”) gauge faces in Sharka’s future

Is there any chance to make another horn like this but instead of mx-5, it has Rx7?
