Ubuntu Pocket Guide

I installed Ubuntu in the middle of last summer and have been using it exclusively at home ever since the install. I’ve been an off-and-on linux user since college (in 94!) but have never found a distro that really agreed with me or that I could get to work on a daily basis. Ubuntu 8.04 was that distro and 2008 was the year of linux on the laptop (desktop), at least for me. I’ve booted XP a grand total of 3 times in the last 9 months. I’m now contemplating removing it from my system entirely since I just don’t need it.

Freedom from Microsoft is better than I ever expected. Moving from an OS that tries actively to stop you from doing your work to an OS that actually HELPS you do work is….. breathtaking? Amazing? I’m not finding the right word. And that very statement is pretty lame; an operating system SHOULD help you do your work rather than hinder. The fact that MS has made us expect to be frustrated with a POS software package that needs to be reloaded every 12-24 months speaks to their stranglehold on the industry. Well, no more. I will never go back. I will only run a Microsoft product inside Virtualbox as an application and never again will I depend on them for an OS. I’m free.

Would you like to be free too?

There’s an excellent Pocket Guide from Ubuntu that you can spend $10 on for a bound copy or download in PDF format FOR FREE! It is totally worth checking out.

As for using it? I did this whole website re-skin in Bluefish. Bluefish is FOSS (Free Open Source Software) that lives in the Ubuntu repositories. About half of the graphics and photos were done in gimp (the 2.4 copy that comes with 8.04, not 2.6.2 that I just upgraded to) and the rest were done in Photoshop CS3 running inside Virtualbox on an XP virtual machine.

Check out that pocket guide. Free yourself.

I love my Ubuntu laptop. With just a little work to set it up, I’m able to do everything I could do in Windows (minus a few games) and it’s all FREE.

    I’ll never go back.
