Joyfast shifter knob review

Joyfast short shift knob

Joyfast short shift knob

Joyfast: many, if not most Miata/MX-5 enthusiasts have never heard of this company. Joyfast sells to Japanese market only. Not many of their parts have made it over here to the States. But I saw their small shift knob online and was smitten. It had to be mine.

The small Joyfast knob is 300 grams. That’s HEAVY! The Voodoo shifter I’ve been using for the past 9 years is lighter than the stock Mazda knob. Light knobs make for more mechanical, rough shifting. Heavy knobs make for smoother, easier shifting. Check out all three knobs Joyfast offers. They have one that’s 440 grams! The shapes of the two larger knobs weren’t quite doing it for me, but the small one… oh man. Carlove at first sight.

Anyway, here’s the photos. Enjoy!

And how does it feel? In a word, awesome. Shifts are smooth and buttery. And the feel of the small knob in my hand. Oh man. It’s really outstanding. It makes my old Voodoo knob feel cheap. That one won’t be going back on Sharka’s shifter for a long time.

And a couple words about Tetsuya Garage, the source of my Joyfast goodness. More awesome. Rod, owner of Tetsuya Garage, is pure class. Got a rare JDM part in mind? Chances of him being able to get it are very good. I’ll be a repeat customer for sure. He even included a Joyfast hand towel in the package! Pure class.

Don’t let Danbo drive the car.

Any idea where I can get a voodoo knob collar? I had one on my last miata and cannot find them for sale anymore..

    • revlimiter says:

I think they used to be made by Brainstorm? That company went under about 4 years ago. I don’t think anyone makes the collars anymore. It’s a shame. There’s not much to it. It would be EASY program a machine to turn out…

I posted this review on ClubRoadster as well and there was also interest in the collar there. Some company is missing out.

Look at that knob, it that erotic or what. Joyfast ahhh a name for illicit love. Wait for it, hand towel provided for your pleasure.

Okay enough with the sexual metaphors I’ve made a mess of my trousers.

    Hey Adam,
Reading this made me snap. Got a nice Mike Satur polished aluminium handbrake handle earlier in the week and it made my existing shifter look a little sad. Just ordered one of these from Rod, can’t wait for it to arrive….!

That is a nice shift knob. I was wondering how you got the round shift ring to fit? It looks great but most a see are rectangular.

    Thanks

    • revlimiter says:

Do you mean the little ring at the bottom of the Joyfast? It came that way! That’s one of the reasons I chose the short model. It comes with that groovy little finish ring.

      Yeah, I said groovy. 🙂

      • Chris Evans says:

No I met your Cobra ring but after searching I found a posting on Miata.net of how you did it.One question I had was I was thinking of upgrading my suspension I notice that you run a OEM rear sway bar is there a reason for this rather than a aftermarket sway bar?

        Thanks

        • revlimiter says:

Oh, that ring! Yeah, I bondo’d it in.

Rear swaybar: I don’t actually run one. I’ve been rear swaybar free for years now. I find I get more grip without one. I can also rotate the car quite easily anyway.

  • Lev says:

Oh great shift knob! It’s very attractive. Hope it will join the market in other countries not only in Japan. Hmmm… looks like the knob has a perfect grip.

  • Nath says:

That shift knob is really tempting. Do you have any problems with it getting too hot? I’ve never used a metal shift knob before.
