Micro Machines MR2 Photoshoot

In the Downtown slums.

In the Downtown slums.

A buddy on Clubroadster sent me a big box last week. A box of toys. GI Joes, Transformers, Marvel figures, and a huge bag of Micro Machines. He wanted nothing in return. He just wanted the toys to go to a good home.

Thank you, Skinny. Seriously.

My favorites by far out of the whole box were the Micro Machines. I’ve not played with Micros since the late 80s. To suddenly have a whole fleet in front of me. Well, it was pretty awesome. And this little MR2? Oh man. This little beauty is the pick of the litter. The sharp corners and the squished deformed style totally work. Curvy Micro Machines are nice and all, but these boxy ones have style.

On top of the world.

Shooting this little car was challenging to say the least. Finding angles to make it look more like a car and less like something smaller than a US quarter was incredibly difficult. But SO much fun! Now that I have a whole fleet of these little guys, I expect to do a few more Micro photoshoots.

Once again, thanks for the toys, Skinny. They totally made my weekend.

    That macro is insane!

This is one of my favorite photo shoots yet. Reminds me of the feelings I had driving my first Japanese sports car – a 1986 MR2. The details of the micro you have actually lead me to believe it’s modeled after an ’87 or ’88(non supercharged) MR2. It has the teardrop alloys (’87+) but black wing mirrors (’88supercharged and all ’89 cars had the wing mirrors color matched to the body)

One detail they got wrong is the rear quarter panel air intake. Looks like they placed it on the US Driver’s side instead of the passenger side. Unless that small square behind the driver’s side door is meant to be the fuel door. Then it’s on the correct side and placement, and they left the intake off all together. I’d be disappointed if they chose to keep a detail like the fuel door and leave of something as iconic as the mid-engined car’s air intake vent.

The color they chose is awesome, too. That metalic champagne is soooo ’80s fabulous. Very understated and not really sporty, honestly. Most Camry’s come in a color like that. But so many MK1 MR2’s came in that color. I’m glad they didn’t do something as typical as red (like mine was) or as boring as white.

I had to actually have my MR2 in front of me before I felt I could reply. heh. You, sir, have a good eye.

The passenger side intake does indeed seem to be missing. There’s a very slight molded detail on the C pillar, but it’s not very well defined. And it couldn’t really pass for an intake. That fender is indeed very clean. No intake grills. And the little square on the driver’s side seems to be the gas filler. It’s very small and square and again has no grill.

The color MAKES this little car, doesn’t it? So 80s. I just bought myself an RX-7 to shoot. Gold with a black roof. Again, so 80s. Galoob made these in a ton of colors (I think 10 for the FB RX-7) so I got to pick my fav. $3 on ebay. Can’t wait to get it.

      I need to source a Miata next…
