My buddy Chris (Spitefulcheerio on the forums) is responsible for this. I restored a Prototipo (identical to the one you see above) for him and he started looking around for horn buttons that would do it justice. He found this beauty on Yahoo Japan. All red and gorgeous and vintage. All swoopy and 70s. So perfect for the 70s wheel.
No. I didn’t steal it. Seriously.
REALLY! I’m shocked you’d think that. SHOCKED I say. I did NOT steal an auction out from under a friend!!! How could you even think such a thing?
There were two of them on YJ classifieds, so I bought and imported both. One went in Sharka.
According to the intartoobs, this is a Momo design from the 70s/80s. I can honestly say I’ve never seen it before, but it’s indeed a genuine Momo button. It has casting marks on the back.
Isn’t it lovely? All red and awesome? Period-accurate, I think is the term I’m looking for. It takes my tiny 1978 Prototipo and plops it square in the 70s.
Did I mention it works? I was hoping nothing was too badly rusted or broken. Yup, it beeps.
A few words about my 310mm Prototipo… I’m having a serious relationship with it. It’s a new thing for me. Usually, I swap wheels every couple months. Sometimes a few times per week. And while I’ve swapped wheels a couple times since blogging about it originally, this wheel just keeps going back in Sharka.
This tiny, old, beat up Prototipo.
I’m in love. For me, right now, this wheel is perfect. And the red horn button is the cherry on top.
Thanks again for turning me onto this button, Chris!!! I owe ya.
That is beyond awesome, and a hell of a find. It would look pretty sweet on my ’60s-’70s (no date stamp on the back, not sure of the exact date) vintage Momo Cavallino wheel. I am jelly.
Oh man, I’d love to try out a Cavallino. I’ve just never found one for the right price.
I’d let you borrow mine, but I get the feeling that it would end up in a frame on your wall and I’d never see it again. 😉
What Cavallino? I have no recollection of it. Pay no attention to the new wheel case on my wall…
It’s all in the details. . . 🙂
I’ve had my eye out for a nice horn button for aaaaaaaaaaaages! That one is lovely. Nice find.
Thanks!!! I keep finding awesome old ones. I almost won a stacked MO MO horn button, but didn’t quite bid enough.
I’m not after a stacked mo mo button. Not at all.
