These have to be the coolest things I’ve seen in a while. I happened across them on Instagram. I think it was on the Explore page. I was just scrolling through the endless models, Miatas, and toys (is that what everyone else sees too?) and saw what looked like a Star Shark cut out of wood with a cup on it.
I tapped.
I geeked out and made manly noises.
I immediately purchased.
These are laser cut Japanese Nostalgic Wheel Coasters by ONEONE2 Auto. They have two different sets at the time of this posting. And they’re AMAZING. Laser cut (I believe I mentioned), 3/16″ basswood, in a custom sized canister. And each one of these is art. The stuff car guys dream of. At least this car guy.
With so many wheels, I needed some help for the blog. Tetsujin and Black Ox stepped up and offered a hand. And they didn’t even punch each other that many times.
Let’s open the cans up.
Right out of the gate, they’re already amazing. Both of these are favorites of mine. Who hasn’t dreamed of a set of Hayashi Sakuras on their car? And the 3 spoke Yokohama Advan A3A would look good on any 80s car.
Another fun pair. The TRD Tosco is an interesting wheel. Making a two-dimensional version is extremely impressive to me. ONEONE2 captured the look really well. And the SSR MK1… what needs to be said? So classic.
Here’s a pairing that I would love to have in Sharka’s wheel collection – RS Watanabe (I think this is the R-type) and the Hayashi Street. I have seriously considered both and have driven my poor wife crazy talking about them. I think the Hayashi would come home first…
A word about the design. Both of these blow me away. I mean, how do you do a banana spoke in 2.5 dimensions? The Wat somehow manages to be both recognizable and awesome. And the Hayashi… damn.
I admit it. I bought these primarily because of the Star Shark. I’m a huge fan of old wheels, but Star Sharks? They have my heart. And ONEONE2’s model is perfect.
But the SSR Reverse Mesh? Holy crap. That’s some intricate laser work. And it’s not even delicate feeling when you pick it up. It somehow feels substantial.
Four more…
Okay. I admit it. I have no idea what the wheel on the right is. It’s supposed to be a model of AME. But… well… I’ve not got any idea. Sorry. revfail.
But the Work Equip 01? Yeah. Super nice version.
Did I mention that the wheel bolts are actually 6 sided? On EVERY wheel? Even the tiny ones on the Reverse Mesh are 6 sided.
Two classics for the last pairing – SSR Longchamp and SSR MK2. This is another pair I wouldn’t kick out of the collection.
And that means we’re all unpacked!
Yeah. That’s the good stuff.
These are so damn beautiful. The design work and machining. Is laser cutting called machining? Whatever it is, it’s very finely done. I’m beyond happy to have these.
I’ll not be using them as coasters. I plan to frame them on a nice black velvet background and stick them on a wall. They’re too pretty to get beer dripped on them.
Maybe I’ll buy another set for coaster use…
Thanks for the help guys! You can go back to beating each other into scrap now.
Thanks for the wheel coasters ONEONE2!!! I love them.
Everyone reading this: go buy a set. You won’t regret it.
I love the idea of framing them. Would make for some great Wall art. I just don’t know about using them as a coaster…I feel like water would go through the holes and leave water marks on a table. Still look beautiful and would love to get a set even just for show
I still need to get these things framed! Nearly a month later and they’re not decorating my walls. I’m ashamed.
BRB, gotta go order some coasters! What an amazing find!
I can’t wait till they make a 3rd set!
I also may be tempted to buy a set. Or I should hold off and actually buy a Miata to put all these parts on.
Everyone needs a set.
Every time I read your blog I buy things! Those unknown AMEs are recent productions: AME x Fatlace FZERO2. Yup, THAT Fatlace…
